Lighting in gardens is a somewhat overlooked subject and should be utilised much more during garden design and landscape projects. Lighting extends the time that a garden can be used especially in late summer when temperatures allow outdoor evening relaxation. Garden Lighting can be used to create atmosphere and mood, and above all safety. It can be used to create washes of colour, highlight features to dramatic effect and uplight trees and specimen plants. Architectual plants lend themselves really well to lighting, when lit correctly they cast superb leaf and foliage shadows. Water features work particularly well with lighting, fittings can be placed below water level to cast a interesting glow, whilst uplit water falls radiate light out through sheen of water. For those fond of koi carp - underwater lighting allows you to enjoy glimpses of the fish later into the evening, when ordinarily the water would appear black. Even simple things in a garden such as a bench or trellis screen can be transformed at night with the right lighting. These days there is a huge array of fixtures and fittings to choose from and so the possibilities are endless. Some interesting new products including planters and furniture that glow!

Stephen Hall Design have experience in garden lighting design and producing beautiful lighting plans for all manner of both modern and traditional gardens. Key factors invloved in garden lighting design include positioning and ratings of transformers, mains and low voltage cable runs and most importantly control of the lighting system. In many case we use remote control systems that provide the client with the convenience of a hand held remote control or wireless wall mounted panel and the flexiblity of multiple switch zones to give choice over how and when the lighting is turned on. More complex garden lighting systems include iPhone apps, movement and daylight sensors, dimming lights and control of pumps and automatic gates.

We use thelatest CAD software to create a 3D visual of the garden at night. This shows the exact lighting positions and light that they will cast, we have found clients love this service as it can be very difficult to imagine how the garden will look when illuminated.
